Are $89 Portable ACs a Scam? What Those Ads Actually Sell
Mostly no, and partly yes. The hardware is real: these are small evaporative coolers that blow air across a wet filter and drop the temperature of that airstream by roughly 5 to 12°F in dry air. The dishonesty is in the advertising. Ads call them air conditioners, promise whole-room cooling, and show a bedroom going from sweltering to arctic in ninety seconds. None of that happens. A 10 watt device cannot cool a room, and no amount of ice changes that. Buy one to cool one person at one desk or one side of a bed and you will probably be happy with it. Buy one to replace an air conditioner and you have been had.
What are these devices actually selling?
They sell evaporative cooling, not air conditioning. A fan pulls room air through a water-soaked filter, some of that water evaporates, and the air leaving the front comes out a few degrees cooler than the air that went in. That cooled stream reaches you if you sit in front of it. Past a few feet, it stops mattering.
The physics is old and nobody disputes it. Evaporative cooling has kept people comfortable in the dry Southwest for generations, in the form of whole-house swamp coolers bolted to roofs. What is new is the size and the sales pitch. Somebody shrank the idea to a desktop box, wrapped it in an ad that says air conditioner, and started selling it to people in Georgia in August.
The hardware itself is usually fine for what it is. Some units are better built than others, some have tanks that last a night and some run dry by two in the morning, and one or two brands will still exist next summer when you need a replacement filter. Those differences decide whether you like the thing you bought. They have nothing to do with the question people actually type into Google, which is whether the thing in the ad does what the ad says. It does not, and the companies running those ads know it.
Even the device we rank first in this category has been sold under language it does not earn. Wirecutter noted that as recently as April 2026, the Amazon listing for the Evapolar evaChill still called it a personal air conditioner, and that a fair number of buyers reported feeling deceived. That is the state of the category. Good products, bad copy.
Why can’t a $50 device cool a room?
Because cooling a room means moving heat out of it, and these devices have nowhere to put the heat. A window unit is really two machines: the half inside takes heat out of your air, and the half outside throws it away. A personal cooler has no outside half, no hose, no exhaust. The heat stays in the room with you.
What evaporation does is convert one kind of heat into another. The energy that used to be in the air as temperature gets spent turning liquid water into vapor, so the air feels cooler while carrying that same energy as humidity. Physicists call this a change from sensible heat to latent heat. Your skin calls it relief, right up until the room gets humid enough that your own sweat stops evaporating. In a sealed bedroom, running an evaporative cooler all night gets you a damper room at roughly the same temperature, and a fan motor quietly adding its own ten watts of heat to the total.
There is no version of this where the room gets colder.
The arithmetic is just as blunt. The smallest window air conditioner most stores carry is rated at 5,000 BTU per hour. A ten watt personal cooler has about 34 BTU per hour of energy passing through it in total. Even in a fantasy where every watt it drew turned into pure cooling, it would be doing roughly one one-hundred-fortieth of the smallest real air conditioner’s job. This is why no reviewer, anywhere, has ever measured a room temperature drop from one of these devices. There is no mechanism for it to happen.
Which specific ad claims are false?
Four claims come up again and again, and all four are false as written: that the device replaces an air conditioner, that it cools a stated number of square feet, that adding ice makes it dramatically colder, and that it uses aerospace or NASA technology. Here is each one against what the device physically does.

The Department of Energy figure that Wirecutter cites for evaporative coolers is a 5 to 15 degree reduction, and the DOE is careful to add that this applies in areas with low humidity. That range describes a properly installed unit pulling in dry outside air, not a desktop box recirculating the air in your bedroom. Are any of them worth buying?
Yes, for one job: cooling one person in one spot. A desk. One side of a bed. A camper, a dorm room, a workshop, an office where somebody else controls the thermostat. Within a few feet, in dry air, these devices deliver cold air at a cost of pennies in electricity and no installation at all.
The trick is buying against that job instead of the fantasy. Judged as a personal cooler, the differences between models suddenly matter a lot. Tank size decides whether it runs through the night or quits at two in the morning. Noise decides whether you sleep. Cost is the other half of the honesty. These are cheap to run, around 10 watts, less than a lightbulb, but the ones with replaceable evaporative cartridges have a consumable in them, and that changes the math over a year. How do you spot the fake review sites?
Look at who is publishing, whether a real person’s name is attached, and where the links go. The pages flooding this category are affiliate landing pages dressed as reviews, and they share a handful of tells that take about ten seconds to check.
Search for any of these products and you will see the pattern immediately. There is a page titled “Consumer Reports On ChillWell 2.0” hosted on an Amazon S3 bucket. There are domains built to sound like testing organizations, with no masthead, no author bio and no address. There are press releases pushed through newswire services and then indexed as if they were journalism. Countdown timers that reset when you reload. Star ratings with no reviews behind them. Every link on the page pointing to the same seller.
Four questions settle it. Does the site name an author with a history? Does it say how it makes money? Does it link to anything it was not paid to link to? Does the URL belong to the organization whose name is on the page? Consumer Reports publishes at consumerreports.org, so their hands-on ChillWell 2.0 write-up lives there and nowhere else. Anything else using that name is borrowing it.

Questions people ask
Are mini portable ACs actually air conditioners?
No. An air conditioner uses refrigerant to move heat out of a space, which is why every real one has an exhaust hose or an outdoor half. These devices have neither. They are evaporative coolers: a fan, a water tank and a wet filter. The industry name for the full-size version is a swamp cooler.
Can a personal air cooler cool a whole room?
No. It cools the air it blows at you, and that effect fades within a few feet. In a closed room it cannot lower the temperature at all, because it has no way to move heat outside. Does adding ice make them colder?
Barely, and not for long. Consumer Reports bought a ChillWell 2.0 and tried it: their reviewer reported that ice created condensation under the unit and did not make the air blowing on them any cooler. Ice chills the water in the tank for a few minutes, then melts and you are back where you started.
Why do so many of these products have four different names?
Because most of them are white-label hardware. The same unit ships from a Chinese factory and gets sold as Coldeez, SaviChill, Libiyi or Sherum, depending on which seller ordered the boxes. What changes between them is the warranty and the support, not the device.
If they work at all, why do so many buyers feel scammed?
Because the product is sold against the wrong expectation. Someone who buys a $40 device to cool their bedroom gets a fan that mists their face and rightly feels cheated. Someone who buys the same device for a desk gets what they paid for. The gap is created by the marketing, not the hardware.
What should I buy if I actually need to cool a room?
A window air conditioner, or a hose-vented portable unit if your window cannot take one. The smallest window units start around 5,000 BTU and cost from roughly $150. That is the price of entry for real room cooling, and no $89 device will get you there.
