Do Evaporative Coolers Work in Humid Climates?

How does evaporative cooling actually work?

Water takes energy to evaporate, and it steals that energy from the air around it. Blow air through a wet filter and some of the water turns to vapor, pulling heat out of the airstream on its way. The air that reaches you is cooler and wetter than the air that went in. That is the whole trick.

Your body already runs this system. Sweat cools you the same way, which is why a dry 95 degree day is bearable and a humid 85 degree day is miserable. In dry air your sweat evaporates fast and you shed heat. In humid air it sits on your skin and does nothing.

A cooler and your own skin are therefore competing for the same resource: the air’s capacity to absorb more water. When that capacity is high, both work well. What should humid-climate buyers get instead?

Buy something that removes moisture instead of adding it. A window air conditioner does both jobs at once: it lowers the temperature and it pulls water out of the air, which is why a 78 degree air-conditioned room feels better than a 78 degree humid one. That is the correct answer for most people in the Southeast.

The cheaper option is a dehumidifier and a decent fan. It sounds indirect and it works, because it fixes the actual constraint. Take a room from 70% humidity down to 50% and your own sweat starts evaporating again, so the fan you already own suddenly cools you. For a bedroom in a humid climate, that pairing beats any evaporative device at any price.

If your window cannot take a unit, a hose-vented portable air conditioner is the fallback. It is louder and less efficient than a window unit, and it costs several times what a personal cooler costs, but it is a real air conditioner: it moves heat out of the room through the hose. Does adding ice change the answer?

Not in any way that lasts. Ice chills the water in the tank, so the first several minutes of airflow come out colder. Then it melts, and the device goes back to being governed by the same humidity ceiling as before.

Consumer Reports bought a ChillWell 2.0 and tried exactly this. Their reviewer reported that adding ice created condensation under the unit and did not make the air blowing on them any cooler. The tank temperature is not the bottleneck. The air’s capacity to absorb water is, and no amount of ice changes that number.
