The real cost is the consumable: an evaporative cartridge runs about $29 and lasts three to six months of regular use, so most owners buy one or two a year. Your own rate matters more than the average: Louisiana and Idaho sit well below it, California and the Northeast well above. Even at double the national average, a 10 watt cooler costs under a dollar a month.

What do consumables add?

This is the number that matters. An evaporative cartridge is a wear part: it accumulates minerals from your water, loses absorbency and eventually starts to smell. Run a cooler daily through a hot summer and you will replace the cartridge once, maybe twice. Call it $29 to $58 a year for a device that costs $99. Compared with a 44 cent monthly power bill, the consumable is roughly fifty times the running cost of the electricity.

Water quality is the lever you control. Filtered water leaves fewer deposits and stretches a cartridge toward the six-month end of the range, while hard tap water pushes it toward three. Cheaper devices come with cheaper filters and a different risk: no reliable parts channel. A 5,000 BTU window unit draws roughly 500 watts, which is fifty times a personal cooler. Eight hours a day at the same national average rate puts it near $22 a month, and larger units running longer hours are how people end up with summer bills that hurt.

The comparison is honest only if you keep the jobs separate. The window unit lowers the temperature of a room, which no personal cooler does, so it is not fifty times more expensive for the same result. Where the comparison does hold is supplementary cooling. That is the strongest financial argument for these devices, and it is nothing like the argument the ads make.
